Carl Liebmann was in business prior to WWII, developing 3 rail 0 gauge trains powered by a 24v DC motor, but the outbreak of the war halted toy production, and Liebmann supplied his motors to the military. Following WWII, Liebmann introduced a railcar based on Der Fliegende Hamburger or The Flying Hamburger. Being in East Germany (GDR), Liebmann was nationalised in 1951, becoming VEB Metallwarenfabrik Stadtilm Thüringen. Four years later, in 1955, Liebmann switched to S gauge, the 0 gauge range being transferred to Zeuke and Wegworth. Liebmann S gauge trains were produced and available into the 1980s although by that time, they were cheap clockwork sets only.
