Carl Gewis

(Gablonz Czechoslovakia)

Carl (or Karol) Gewis formed his jewelry business circa 1890, soon expanding to then new plastics, celluloid, polystyrene, resins and metalwork. Karl Gewis passed away in 1933, after which his sons Josef and Max ran the company until shorly after WWII, when the business was nationalised. The new nationalised firm began producing model trains late 1940s, using the name of the former owners, Gewis. The new models seemed to have much commonality with the pre war German Trix Express system, one theory being that, late pre war, Gewis was sub contracting for Trix, and had retained tooling throughout the war years. The Gewis models are believed to have been devised by a Czech engineer, Hans Peukert. Production included an eight wheeled overhead electric locomotive and a rail car together with suitable passenger cars, all with moulded plastic bodies. Track was not unlike Trix, with a black plastic base, fitted with both two and three rails. Production appears to have been from late 1940s into the 1950s.
