The locomotive illustrated below was advertised for sale in 2019, with this description :
A maroon and gold-striped gauge 0 model of the streamlined, bullet-nosed 4-6-2 Pacific Coronation class LMS Duchess of Gloucester locomotive, running number 6225, designed by Sir William Stanier. Stamped '17 99' on the tender, there are no other markings. This seems to be an exact copy the Bassett Lowke Coronation model of 1939 but I have no idea where or when it was manufactured although I have owned it for almost 20 years. If anyone knows please message me and I will add the information to the description.
In excellent running and cosmetic condition, this is a very powerful loco and I used it for drawing a train of eight B-L LMS coaches with little difficulty. It weighs 2.5Kg. To all intents and purposes it is indistinguishable from the Basset Lowke model of the same name so a chance to own one at a fraction of the cost.
The Bassett Lowke Coronation model: The models were handmade and hand-finished and hand-painted, including all the lettering. They also had factory numbers stamped into or scratched into their undersides, presumably so that the builders could work on a few items at a time, and not confuse which parts had been hand-tailored to fit which locos. The 1937/8 models were painted blue/silver whilst the 1939 models were maroon/yellow. It is assumed only about 30 examples were ever produced.
Prototype Locomotive History: The 6225 Duchess of Gloucester was the first of the second batch of five Coronation class locomotives to be built, finished between May and September 1938. Unlike the first batch of five (which were finished in blue and silver), the second batch were red and gold to be a closer match to the company's normal livery. The 6225 was completed in May 1938, and decommissioned in 1964. This batch was followed by a run of non-streamlined locomotives, after which the works produced another batch of streamliners. All streamlining was eventually stripped.
