The US toy maker Louis Marx first established a factory is Dudley (near Birmingham), England in late 1931, commencing toy production in 1932, and ceasing during 1940, when the factory switched to war work. Toy production recommenced at Dudley for a short period after World War II, ceasing in October 1947 at which point the business relocated to Swansea, South Wales, where production commenced early the following year. The Marx company became a part of Dunbee-Combex-Marx (who owned Hornby at that time) in 1976, although production reduced, with the company entering bankrupcy in February 1980. A liquidation sale took place 5th March 1981.

Very special thanks to Michael Foster for his British Toy Trains series of books, and to those friends, at home and abroad, who have generously shared their knowledge and images of British Marx production. You know who you are.
