Large Plastic E Units (EMD E-7s)
The various large plastic ABA units were issued as powered A unit, unpowered A unit and unpowered B unit, and fitted with a combination of four coupler types, (i) metal scissor coupler, only fitted to the early SF long nose powered A units, (ii) plastic scissor coupler, (iii) metal tab and slot coupler and (iv) metal tab only (no slot) coupler, the type depending on whether the unit was originally sold as an individual unit, or as part of an AA, AB or ABA set. The powered unit did not have a front (nose or cab end) coupler in any combination.
Individual powered A unit; the rear coupler was plastic scissor
AA, powered and unpowered; the powered unit had tab and slot rear coupler. The unpowered A unit had tab (no slot) coupler one end and plastic scissor coupler the other end
AB, A powered, B unpowered; the powered unit had tab and slot rear coupler. The unpowered B unit had tab (no slot) coupler one end and plastic scissor coupler the other end
ABA, powered A, unpowered B and unpowered A; the powered A unit has tab and slot rear coupler, unpowered B unit had tab (no slot) coupler one end and tab and slot the other end. The unpowered A unit had tab (no slot) on rear end with plastic scissor coupler on the nose end
For far more detail regarding the Marx EMD E-7 range, an article by John Torgerson in the TCA E*Train magazine is essential reading.

The loco illustrated below is an unusual unmarked red moulding, shown to members of the Marx Yahoo! group, June 2010. The body is unpainted, showing no trace of any heat stamping or other marking, other than the usual moulded 1998 below the cab windows. The red sprues through the chassis indicate it must be original, and the Marx logo and third rail pickup discount any K-Line involvement. An unfinished Marx Research and Development project?
