Antonio Consoli

(Toms River, New Jersey, USA)

Having purchased an incomplete Western Coil Zephyr set, and failing to find the missing items, in desperation Antonio Consoli contacted Western Coil for spares information. Western Coil advised that they had far too many items to search through but, for a sum to be agreed, Mr Consoli could purchase all the parts Western Coil still had, plus any tooling still available. Mr Consoli duly bought the lot and even contacted the makers of the original motors (Barber-Coleman) who were able to supply new motors. Mr Consoli then learned how to cast aluminum, and eventually began producing sets using original Western Coil parts, new Barber-Coleman motors and parts he and his family cast using the original Western Coil tooling.

Sets were made with both aluminum and gold (bronze) finishes, and a new dome car was created. The full story, as told by Tony Consoli himself, appears in the Train Collectors Quarterly, October 1986, downloadable in pdf format from the TCA web site (TCA members only). The Consoli business was very much a family affair, and did produce items other than the Zephyr, as illustrated below.
