Chad Valley dates back to a printing firm in business in the 1830s, although the Chad Valley name was not registered until some years later, following a factory relocation to the valley of the river Chad, outskirts of Birmingham. Chad Valley is perhaps best known for an extensive range of teddy bears and dolls, as well as games for children and, later, tin toys including trains. The business switched to war work during World War II, and continued to prosper upon returning to toys and games after the war. By the 1970s the company was experiencing problems which lead to major restructuring, but to no avail. Chad Valley was taken over by Palitoy in 1978, and the Chad Valley name was purchased by Woolworths ten years later, being used by Woolworths for their own brand range of toys and games. Following the demise of Woolworths in 2009, the Chad Valley name was purchased by Argos, and is currently owned by Sainsbury's, who purchased Argos in 2016.
